About the lodge

Explore the magic of Rusinga Island, heart and gem of Kenya’s Lake Victoria. Opened in 2011 with permaculture practices as a goal, this lodge strives to promote sustainability, birds and wildlife, organic gardening, composting and recycling, blended with gardens and forest, beauty and relaxation, good food and friendly service. Toilets are composted sawdust and do not flush with water. A safe, clean, trash free island is our ultimate goal. Count the birds or catch the lake breeze with a good book. Peace, relaxation, cold beer and good company. Come and explore. We love leading hikes to the Ligongo and Wayando  mountain view points. Or you can safely do a self guided walk around the nearby fishing villages.

History

We are always asked about how we came to be on Rusinga Island.  The story is a long one we have posted on the wall behind the bar. Linda Campbell Tilton from Washington, D.C. and Thadayo Olewa Okatch, a 1961 airliftee from Rusinga were married in 1965 in Kansas and their son Otieno was born in 1967. This lodge is a tribute to their love story.

Rooms

Rooms are found in Bandas.  Each one has a name and unique style. You pick which one fits your needs. Rooms are equipped with electrical outlets to charge phones and devices, in room toilets and showers, towels and soap,  fans, reading lights and even reading materials. Maid service is daily. Wifi is best in the restaurant/lounge area.
