About the lodge
Sarova Shaba game lodge is in an oasis in the heart of the reserve just east of Samburu, or one can say, in the Born free country that Joy and George Adamson called home for many years. The lodge is 314km from Nairobi, a 45 minute flight from Nairobi to Shaba or Samburu airstrip or a 5 hour drive through the curving roads around Mt. Kenya crossing the equator at Nanyuki. It is set along the bank of the Ewaso Nyiro River laid out around the springs that flow into the river. The lodge has a virtual mini forest, a fish pond and a large free form swimming pool.
Rooms and suites
Sarova Shaba game lodge set in the Kenyan semi-arid north, offers 85 modern rooms in chalet style with a private views of the wildlife-rich banks of the Ewaso Nyiro river. Each room overlooks the river where the wildlife come out to lounge by the river’s banks. All chalet style rooms and suites at Sarova Shaba Game Lodge have: private balconies with close views of the river and game park, ensuite bathrooms with permanent showers and WC, running hot and cold water, razor outlets with 220 and 240 volts, beds with mosquito nets and duvets, overhead fans, tea and coffee making facilities.
Sarova Shaba born free suite
Sarova Shaba game lodge has one tastefully furnished presidential suite that also encapsulates the Samburu culture in its interior décor. Situated amongst natural springs and lily pools, the suite is a stand-alone unit with a large bedroom, living and dining area and a vast bathroom with a private Jacuzzi. This suite embodies the history of Joy Adamson and is named the Born free suite.
Sarova Shaba executive suite
The lodge has four executive suites with an elaborate lounge that opens into a large bedroom with breathtaking views of the Ewaso Nyiro river.
Sarova Shaba standard room
These eighty chalet style rooms are across two storeys, four rooms to a block, and are designed to incorporate intricate detail, offering amazing views of the Ewaso Nyiro river and the numerous live springs that run across the lodge. The ground floor rooms are suitable for persons with limited mobility.
Game drives
Shaba national reserve has a particular place in the history of Kenyan game conservation, as it was in this reserve that the authoress Joy Adamson died. She was greatly known for her efforts in the rehabilitation of the compliant leopard into a wild environment. Shaba was one of Joy Adamson’s greatest African loves; it was in this tranquil wilderness where she released the first hand-raised lions.

Visit to traditional Samburu village
Get to visit the Samburu village and watch the beautifully beaded and decorated Samburu Morans performing cultural dances and songs. A resident culturalist will be there to talk more on the culture and traditions of the Samburu community.

Shaba special five
Sarova Shaba is the only lodge in the Shaba National Reserve, sited in a perfect spot on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. This river attracts a profusion of game – large herds of elephants, the elusive leopard, as well as species particular to the north like the gerenuk, Beisa oryx and the reticulated giraffe. It is also home to many crocodiles, and our guests can have the thrill of watching them crawl out onto the banks to feed on the food thrown to them by our staff.

Sarova Shaba game lodge is built around a natural breathtaking terrain attractively laid out with Chalet style rooms that have views of the Ewaso Nyiro River. Natural spring water has been harnessed to ribbon its way in and out, all around the property creating a beautiful ambiance for the lodge that you have to see to believe it.
Dining at Sarova Shaba
Sarova Shaba game lodge excels in the freshness and quality of its food which is supported by the lodge’s own vegetable and herb garden. The food quality and standards embody those of the renowned Sarova cuisine brand “Kitchens of Sarova”. All meals are served al fresco at the Surpelei restaurant that is raised on stilts offering breathtaking views of the lush gardens and the Ewaso Nyiro river. The restaurant is fitted with elaborate buffet counters unmatched in all lodges and live cooking stations all set to tempt and please your palate. Sarova Shaba’s chefs are readily available to cater for most special dietary requirements and meal preferences.
Surpelei restaurant
The main restaurant is raised on stilts overlooking the river and free-form pool with stunning views of the well-manicured lawns and greenery of the Ewaso Nyiro River and a plethora of bird-life. The restaurant serves buffet-style breakfast, lunch and dinner. The sumptuous cuisine includes Pan-African, Pan-European and Pan-Asian. The salad buffet has a wide variety of salads using the freshest ingredients and herbs from the Lodge’s own vegetable and herb garden. The restaurant can accommodate 150 people.
Chemi Chemi bar
The bar is located along the river bank with natural spring water channels where guests can unwind to the soothing sound of water. Sarova Shaba game lodge prides itself on an extensive cellar of imported wines, a wide range of premium spirits and other preferred beverages from a well-stocked bar.
Carraluma poolside bar
The enchanting free-form swimming pool at Sarova Shaba offers a relaxing spot for weary travellers. We further enhance your experience with an elaborate pool bar that serves refreshing fresh juices, a variety of cocktails, beers and light beverages, and all that you need to make you unwind further.
Champagne breakfast
A unique experience of dining on the sand bank along the river. The breakfast includes live cooking against the backdrop of the Ewaso Nyiro river and Shaba game park.
Meetings and conference facilities
Are you looking for a unique concept for your next training or conference? Sarova Shaba Game Lodge offers a conference facility that can accommodate approximately 100 delegates for a unique conference with a difference deep in the African bush. The Doum Room is designed with open French windows overlooking the fish pond and veranda. Audiovisual equipment and secretarial assistance is available.
Weddings and honeymoons
Sarova Shaba game lodge lends itself to the ideal wedding with the culture and traditions of the Samburu people. The weddings are held at the landscaped greens at the lodge, with a Samburu elder blessing the marriage. The lodge is fully geared so that guests can truly enjoy themselves without worrying about the details, which include; venue using Samburu fabrics, beads, flowers, music, dance, sparkling wine, tiered cake and bush dinner.
