Nile crocodile is one of the oldest species on earth that have survived over millions of years and the world’s second largest reptile after saltwater crocodile. They are prehistoric survivors of dinosaur antecedents. In their present form, they date back 80 million years. Egyptians kept them as pets 26 centuries ago. It is fascinating to watch them, albeit from a distance.  And that is why they are a favourite among safari travellers to Kenya. A crocodile may enter hibernation during drought periods, which can last for several months at a stretch. And the way they do it is by digging a hole in a dry riverbank or riverbed and retreating into it. Crocodiles in these dens can survive without food for up to two years.






2) Swallowing stones

After eating their meals, crocodiles swallow large boulders that grind the food in the stomach. It aids digestion. And they lie in the stomach undigested. These stones in the stomach also help to act as ballast by adding weight.

3) Ambushing

When threatened, crocodiles can hold their breath and stay under water for up to 2 hours. This ability allows them to target and follow the prey incognito for hours, days or even weeks. Then the crocodile ambush and attack the prey at the right moment jumping up into action making sure that it is swift and efficient.

4) Threat

The only threat to crocodiles is humans, who have strived hard and successfully managed to increase its once depleting population. But lower beings have no conscience or consciousness. Hence, humans are still an item in its list of diets and crocodiles continue to be a threat to people.

5) Meat

Crocodile meat is sold commercially to restaurants in the Far East, most notably Hong Kong and China, as well as Europe because it is considered exotic meat. The Chinese attribute healing powers to its meat and considers it as a cure for respiratory diseases.
